Participation in cleaning action Ljubljanica 2013

On Saturday, 20th April 2013, we joined 22nd Traditional cleaning action Ljubljanica 2013, which was organized by DPA Vivera. Whilst divers were diligently cleaning the underwater world Ljubljanica, the project team Aquaviva had placed educational stand in Ljubljana at Šuštar Bridge. We were presenting aquatic invertebrates, which are often overlooked and unknown, because of its small size. Using magnifiers and magnifying glasses, visitors easily saw the larvae of various insects, amphipods, turbellaria...

April events in centre Aqualutra

Also this year we were active on Earth Day. Besides having a stand at international fair LOV, we hosted a group of students. Students of Biology and Ecology with Nature Conservation, University of Maribor, visited Aqualutra centre on 19th April 2013. We presented them our institute, as an example of non-governmentl and non-profit organization that obtains different projects. They got familiar if LIFE financial mechanism through our previous Life project, Aqualutra, and current Life project, Aquaviva.

In the afternoon we met with pupils from primary school Bakovci. Their visit included a walk around Hodoš lake, where an educational path is set, "With otter to cleaner water". Together we were doscovering the biodiversty of Hodoš lake. Photos are available in the gallery of primary school Bakovec (photos 114-144, on pages 6-8).

We visited primary school Tone Čufar

Yesterday, 16th April 2013, we visited primary school Tone Čufar. To a group of pupils from the 1st to 5th class and Eco dudes were presented freshwaters. First, we designed three different models of wetlands. We've tested the models and saw what is happening to our water. How fast the water flowed from the model? How much water flowed from the wetlands? Is spilled water as dirty as at the beginning? We compared all three models and learned how people influence the wetlands.

After we learned about wetlands, we took a closer look at aquatic invertebrates. Since these organisms are small and often hidden among the rocks, in the sand, they are often overlooked. Although invertebrates are inconspicuous, are very important indicators of the state of the water body. Pupils were shown invertebrates from the stream from Ljubljansko Barje. They get to know stoneflies, minors, mayflies, dragonflies, leeches, turbellaria... After this we performed several water experiments and learned how oils and detergents affect some organisms in the water.

Medvedki created a home for otter

vrtec vrhovci_medvedki20130409Today, on 9th April 2013, accompanied with otter I visited group Medvedki (Teddy bears) from kindergarten Vrhovci, unit Rožnik. First we made a circle and got to know mysterious otter: what does it eat, how do we track it, where is its den and how is adapted to water environment. We touched its fur and compared our size with otter. Children still have to grow a bit to be bigger then otter. When we learned about otter, it was to time for some creativity. We were colouring, cutting and gluing. Together we created a new home for otter. A pond filled with life. On the bottom there is crayfish guard, colourful fish are hidding among water lilies, on the bank frogs are croaking, above all dragonflies are flying. On the nearby tree a kongfisher is sitting and a beaver is having a snack. And somewhere in the middle is otter, taking care that everything is in its place. Biodiversity as "teddy bears" see it.
