On Tuesday, 14th May 2013, we have prepared a nature eduction day for 11 gifted children of primary school Vižmarje Brod. We made models of wetlands, which were tested in order to get to know some of the functions of wetlands, such as cleaning and water retention, prevent flooding and erosion. One of the functions of wetlands is also providing habitat of rare and endangered species. We take an advantage of the workshop to learn about a small fraction of biodiversity of inland waters - aquatic invertebrates. Pupils have learned to distinguish larvae of stoneflies, mayflies, caddisflies and dragonflies between each other. They observed how amphipods are swimming and in what kind of houses live caddisflies. The acquired knowledge was used to create a simple dichotomous key to determine aquatic invertebrates.
Nature education day was co-financed by the City of Ljubljana.

The project was presented through a poster; the abstract is available on the conference website (page 23).
After the conference, they responded to the invitation of Irish colleagues and in the beginning of May visited two LIFE projects whose target species is otter: IRD Duhallow Life Project and MulkearLIFE. You are invited to read short news of Slovenian visit of the river Allow (Duhallow Life project) and the river Mulkear (MulkearLIFE).

On Wednesday, 24th April 2013, we participated in the nature education day for 9th classes in primary school Božidar Jakec in Ljubljana. The purpose of nature education day was to acquaint the pupils with the term "biodiversity", and to present them a variety of representatives of the biodiversity in freshwater. Over the course of four hours, they realized the representatives of the four groups of animals: invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. Pupils got to know aquatic invertebrates through making a simple dichotomous key. Members of the Societas herpetologica Slovenica - Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles of Slovenia represented amphibians and turtles. Pupils got to know the difference between anurans and caudatas, became familiar with the concept of "non-native" species and discovered the differences between rodents and carnivores.
Nature education day was co-financed by the Vity of Ljubljana.
