Children from primary schools Grad and Kuzma visited centre Aqualutra

Otter educational and information centre in Križevci recieves more and more visits from pupils of primary schools from Goričko. This delights us since one of the most important roles of the centre is informal education of pupils of primary schools from municipalities in region Prekmurje. These schools are remote from urban areas and consequently have less possibilities for visiting different educational institutions. To these children we want to show nature values and quality of life in their vicinity. Often it proves that children are not familiar with their vicinity and are therefore not aware of its nature values, which can be protected the most by locals.

Children of higher grades of primary schools Grand and Kuzma are spending last June days at first nature-sport summer camp 2012. In this way also Otter centre became part of the project "Popestrimo šolo" ("Let's diversify school"). On 29th June - Danube Day we got a visit of 9 children and 4 companions. We spent three hours talking about importance of water and water environment. We got familiar with freshwater animals and their dependance on our water treatment. We tried to find out how to treat water more responsibly, how to influence on drivers to be more aware of nimals on the road, in short we were "playing nature conservancy". Summer heat did not stop us from visiting nearby stream Mala Krka, where we looked for water and riparian animals. We were amazed by biodiversity although the level of water was very low. Water is held back in hollows under tree roots and in pools, which represents a refuge from heat from stream inhabitants.

Make a new home for otter

lent7Institute Lutra was more than happy to accept an invitation from Friends of Youth Association Maribor and join them at their workshops in the Maribor City park. During the Lent Festival FYA Maribor organizes daily workshops for children, where they present each day a different animal. On 28th June the special guest was the otter with its friends from a pond. The workshop was performed in two parts. In the morning children were making freshwater animals from clay, while in the afternnon they got a chance to create a new home for otter and its friends. Along with the creative work we got familiar with otter and its friend, where and how do they live, what tracks do they leave behind. Photos from the workshop are available in the gallery.

World Environment Day 2012

predavanje-RatečeDruštvo za naravo - Jalovec invited us to have a lecture on World Environment Day. Lecture Live water - from biodiversity to the tap took place in local community hall in Rateče.

Workshop "Water and Otter" for primary school Kobilje

Agency Muranica, turistično organiziranje in svetovanje, arranged a workshop in our centre for primary school Kobilje in Prekmurje. On 30th May 23 pupils from 5th to 8th grade visited our centre. During the presentation we talked about water, freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity, about otter as endangerd umbrella sprecies, inhabiting mentioned ecosystems. We got familiar with both LIFE projects. First was about conservation of otter population in Goričko, the second one is about promotion and conservation of freshwater biodiversity. Since traffic is one of the biggest threats to otters, we also discussed about animals in traffic and got to know STOPJEŽ project. There are measures with which drivers can reduce the number of run-over animals. Children can contribute by warning their parents to drive more carefully. To the back of their parents car they can put a sticker, warning other drivers to the animals in traffic.

We did not get familiar with the expression biodiversity only in theory but also in practice. We visited nearby stream that is in good ecomorphologic state and with water of good quality. Children were amazed over what lives in such a small stream. In the end they tried themselves in long jumps and realised that most of martens are better jumpers.
