This year WWD's slogan corresponds with subjects of project Aquaviva, since part of taking care of water is also its purification. Preserved wetlands provide us with several services, of which we are often not aware. Therefore we often consider wetlands as wasteland, draining and changing them. On the other side we are building expensive water treatmant plants, which demand maintenance.
New Yourk City already figured it out that this is not the best practice. To provide public supply of clean water, the city decided to invest into improvement of land management and prevention of waste and nutrient runoff in the watershed. So instead of investing US$ 6-8 billion, they spent only US$ 1-1.5 billion. Additionally they do not have any annual running costs.
As you can see, wetlands and its biodiversity provide us with much more than you can imagine. Let's protect them!
